truck
The truck first appears as a sound in the distance, a diesel engine rumbling on the road behind the man and the boy as they hide in the woods. The man hears it and immediately grabs the boy, dragging the grocery cart through the trees and tilting it over to conceal it. The boy is frozen with fear, and the man pulls him close, whispering, "We have to run." They tear through the crumbling bracken, the boy terrified, the man urging him on. The truck rumbles into view, with men standing in the bed looking out. The boy falls, and the man pulls him up. They find an old roadway and crouch under a bank, gasping for breath. The diesel engine runs on God knows what, and the man can see the top of the truck moving along the road, men standing in the stakebed, some holding rifles. The truck passes on, black diesel smoke coiling through the woods, the motor sounding ropy, missing and puttering, before it quits. The men talk, unlatch and raise the hood, and after a while the truck begins to roll, lumbering and creaking like a ship. They cannot get it fast enough to start on that slope, and it coughs and bucks and stops again. One of their number, a roadagent with a tattoo of a bird on his neck, comes through the weeds twenty feet away, unbuckling his belt. The man cocks the pistol and holds it on him, and a tense confrontation ensues. The roadagent claims the truck runs on diesel fuel, with three fifty-five gallon drums in the bed, and that they have ammunition for their guns. He tries to bargain, saying they have a man hurt, but the man refuses. The roadagent draws a knife and grabs the boy, holding the knife at his throat. The man fires from a two-handed position, killing the roadagent instantly. He picks up the boy and sets off at a dead run, holding the boy's knees, the boy clutching his forehead, covered with gore and mute as a stone. The truck people camp in the road itself, building a fire there, and the man later finds the charred billets of wood stuck in the melted tar together with ash and bones. He squats and holds his hand over the tar, feeling a faint warmth. He finds the bones and skin piled together with rocks over them, a pool of guts, the bones looking to have been boiled. The truck's tracks in the ash, faint and washed out, remain visible, and the man thinks he can smell them. The truck people had camped in the road itself, building a fire there, and charred billets of wood lay stuck in the melted tar together with ash and bones. The man squatted and held his hand over the tar, feeling a faint warmth coming off of it. He stood and looked down the road. Then he took the boy with him into the woods. He walked out through the woods to where they'd left the cart. It was still lying there but it had been plundered. The few things they hadnt taken scattered in the leaves. Some books and toys belonging to the boy. His old shoes and some rags of clothing. He righted the cart and put the boy's things in it and wheeled it out to the road. Then he went back. There was nothing there. Dried blood dark in the leaves. The boy's knapsack was gone. Coming back he found the bones and the skin piled together with rocks over them. A pool of guts. He pushed at the bones with the toe of his shoe. They looked to have been boiled. No pieces of clothing. Dark was coming on again and it was already very cold and he turned and went out to where he'd left the boy and knelt and put his arms around him and held him. The truck thus functions as a mobile fortress for a group of cannibalistic marauders, a symbol of organized predation in the post-apocalyptic world. Its appearance triggers a crisis that forces the man to kill, an act that profoundly traumatizes the boy and reshapes their understanding of the dangers they face. The truck's diesel engine, its capacity to carry armed men, and its role as a base for hunting and consuming other survivors mark it as a key instrument of the "bad guys," a mobile threat that contrasts with the man and boy's slow, vulnerable progress on foot with their grocery cart. The encounter with the truck and its crew is a pivotal event that tests the man's resolve and the boy's innocence, leaving a lasting scar on their journey.
